 What is MATÉ?

Maté is South America´s famous green tea which has won worldwide admiration because of its special energizing and nutritional qualities, as well as its unique delicious flavour.

Maté is made from the dried leaves of Ilex Pararguarensis, a native South American holly.

Long used by the indigenous peoples of South America it was adopted by European colonizers from the 17 th C onwards. Today Maté is consumed by millions of South Americans as an all-occasion drink, occupying a position like that of coffee in the US or tea in Britain and China.

Who we are and what is LA MERCED ORGANIC MATÉ?

Las Marias is a family-owned company founded in 1924. It is a

is a wholy integrated agricultural business with its own certified organic maté plantations and packaging facilities. Our aim is to produce natural products that are of the highest quality, using agricultural techniques that take into account ecological and enviromental factors such as soil conservaton; zero use of pesticides and herbicides and protection of the local flora and fauna around our plantations.

All our plantations and production processes are under strict supervison of Organización Internacional Agropecuaria, a memeber of IFOAM.

Our organic Maté LA MERCED comes in loose leaf, 500g(17.5oz) packs or in boxes of 25 teabags each.

Nutritional Properties :

  • Vitamins, Minerals and Aminoacids : Maté is similar on chemical properties but more nutritious than green tea. Potassium, sodium, manganese and magnesium are present in significant amounts in the leaves and the infusion (Tenorio Sanz & Torrija Isasa 1991). So are Vitamins B-1, B-2 , C and A riboflavin, carotene, choline, pantothenic acid, choline and insoitol (F. Akaridis 1987)
  • Polyphenols: Similarly to green tea, mate is a powerful health beverage because it has 11polyphenols (M.Kawakami & A.Kobayashi 1991). These are considered strong antioxidants and turn up the body´s natural defenses and ward off everyday cellular attacts that cause the body to deteriorate and develop numerous symptoms of desease.
  • In a study made at the Pasteur Institute recently( A.Gugliucci & AJC Stahl , 1994 ) water extracts of Ilex Paraguarensis proved to be more potent antioxidants than either ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT) in inhibiting low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. Maté was found to have similar properties as red wine in this sense. It is well know that red wine exhibits strong antioxidant properties and is also a potent inhibitor of LDL oxidation. This may explain the French paradox, given the higher consumption of wine in France as compared to other countries and the lower incidence of cardiovascular deseas in this country.
  • Maté´s boyant effect comes from mateine, which is part of the methyl xanthene family from which caffeine and the active compound in tea, theobromine, also derived.

The xanthine in Maté is distributed differently the body than with coffee or tea. Wherease coffee stimulates only the nervous system, maté is incorporated into the body gently and stimulates the brain, muscles, lungs and heart as well as the nervous system. ( D.D. Mowrey 1997).

  • Maté is an excellent energizing drink for sports and physical fitness fans. Appart from providing essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium and sodium, it delays the onset of lactic acid buildup in muscles.
